The Up and Down Prints
2003
A suite of three color woodcuts on Rives BFK. Prints are 22.25" x 23" and are signed and numbered by the artist on the verso. In an edition of 32.

The Up and Down Prints are derived from The Up and Down Paintings from 1999-2000. They take their name from the vertical direction in which the text is to be read: either up or down, and from the brief narrative depicted by the pairs of words in each print. In each of the three works, a 2-step sequence is created by either changing one letter or by adding or subtracting one letter. Consequently, three very economical plots are created in which the verbs and nouns themselves are the locus of and agents of the action. They demonstrate that language is not only capable of representing objects and actions, but also of becoming and enacting them through linguistic feats.
